    Pearl And Bead Restringing

Hopman Jewelers is proud to offer the following jewelry services:

    Pearl & Bead Restringing

    Protect the Pieces You Treasure

Pearls and beaded jewelry are timeless, but the string holding them together doesn’t last forever. Over time, everyday wear can cause silk, cord, or other stringing materials to stretch, weaken, discolor, or fray.

At Hopman Jewelers, we offer professional pearl and bead restringing to help keep your favorite necklaces and bracelets secure and ready to wear for years to come.

Whether you have a treasured strand of pearls, a family heirloom, or a favorite beaded necklace that needs a little attention, we can evaluate the piece and recommend the appropriate restringing service.

    When Should Pearls Be Restrung?

You don't necessarily have to wait until a strand breaks. In fact, restringing it before that happens can help prevent lost pearls or beads.

It may be time to have your jewelry restrung if you notice:

Knots that are stretched, loose, dirty, or fraying
Gaps developing between the pearls or beads
A strand that seems longer than it used to be
    String or cord becoming visible
A clasp that no longer feels secure
Pearls or beads moving excessively between knots
A strand that is worn frequently and hasn't been restrung in several years

If you're unsure, bring your jewelry to Hopman Jewelers and we'll be happy to inspect it.

    Why Are Pearls Individually Knotted?

Traditional pearl strands are often knotted between each pearl. Those tiny knots serve an important purpose.

If the strand should break, knotting can help prevent all of the pearls from scattering and potentially becoming lost. The knots also help keep the pearls from rubbing directly against one another and causing wear.

Depending on the piece and the type of beads, not every strand requires individual knotting. We can evaluate your jewelry and determine the appropriate restringing method.

    Pearl Necklace & Bracelet Restringing

Pearls require special care because they're softer and more delicate than many other gemstones. Professional restringing can refresh the appearance of the strand while helping make it secure again.

We can restring many types of pearl jewelry, including:

    Pearl necklaces
    Pearl bracelets
    Single and multiple-strand designs
    Graduated pearl strands
    Family and heirloom pearl jewelry
    Cultured pearl jewelry

If your clasp also needs attention, we can inspect it at the same time and discuss replacement options.

    Bead Restringing

    Restringing isn't just for pearls.

We can also evaluate many types of beaded necklaces and bracelets that have become stretched, damaged, or broken. Because bead materials, sizes, drill holes, and construction methods vary considerably, we'll inspect your jewelry before determining the best way to restring it.

Have all of the loose beads from a broken strand? Bring them with you! We'll take a look and determine what can be done.

Can You Change the Clasp While Restringing My Pearls?

Yes. Restringing is a great time to evaluate the clasp.

If your existing clasp is worn, difficult to operate, or simply isn't the style you want anymore, we can discuss replacement options. A new clasp can provide additional security while also giving an older strand a subtle update.

What If My Pearl Necklace Breaks?

Don't panic and don't throw anything away.

Gather as many of the pearls or beads as you can find and place everything, including the clasp and any pieces of the original string, into a small bag or container. Bring the entire piece to Hopman Jewelers so we can evaluate it.

If beads or pearls are missing, we'll discuss the available options with you.

How Long Does Pearl or Bead Restringing Take?

Restringing is not typically a while-you-wait service. Turnaround time depends on the construction of the piece, number of pearls or beads, number of strands, condition of the clasp, and work required but can be approximately 4-6 weeks.

We'll evaluate your jewelry and provide additional information about the service and expected turnaround time before the work is completed.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How often should pearls be restrung?
There isn't one schedule that works for every strand. Pearls worn frequently should be inspected regularly, while pearls worn only occasionally may go much longer between restringing. If you notice stretching, fraying, discoloration, or gaps between the knots and pearls, it's a good idea to have them inspected.

Do pearls always have to be knotted between each pearl?
No. The appropriate stringing method depends on the jewelry. Traditional fine pearl strands are commonly individually knotted, while other beads and designs may require different techniques.

Can you restring a broken pearl necklace?
In many cases, yes. Bring us all of the pearls, clasp, and any remaining components so we can inspect the piece.

Can you restring beads other than pearls?
Yes. We can evaluate many types of beaded necklaces and bracelets to determine whether they can be restrung.

Can you replace my clasp at the same time?
Yes. We can inspect your existing clasp and discuss replacement options if necessary.

Can you shorten or change the length of my strand?
Depending on the construction of the jewelry, this may be possible. Bring the piece in so we can discuss how you'd like it to fit.

    How much does restringing cost?
The cost varies depending on the number and size of the pearls or beads, length of the strand, number of strands, knotting requirements, clasp work, and overall construction. We'll evaluate your jewelry before providing pricing.
