A quality timepiece is more than just a way to tell time, it’s a personal statement, a symbol of craftsmanship, and sometimes, a treasured heirloom. But like any precision instrument, a watch needs regular care to keep it running smoothly.
At Hopman Jewelers, we specialize in a wide range of watch repair services from quick fixes to intricate overhauls. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of watch repairs and how they’re done:
Battery Replacement
When It’s Needed: Your quartz watch stops ticking or shows inconsistent timekeeping.
The Process: The case back is carefully removed using the appropriate tools. The old battery is removed and replaced with a fresh, high-quality battery. The seals are inspected and replaced if necessary to maintain water resistance. The watch is set to the current time.
Typical Turnaround: Same day or next-day service.
Watch Band Adjustment & Replacement
When It’s Needed: Your watch is too tight or loose, or the band is worn or broken.
The Process: For metal bands, links are added or removed using specialized tools. For leather or silicone bands, we’ll help find a proper replacement and install it. Pins and clasps are also checked and replaced as needed.
Typical Turnaround: 15–30 minutes for adjustments, longer for special-order replacements.
Mechanical Movement Service / Cleaning & Overhaul
When It’s Needed: Automatic or manual watches start losing time, stop running, or haven’t been serviced in 5+ years.
The Process: The movement is removed from the case and fully disassembled. Each component is cleaned using ultrasonic machines. Worn or damaged parts are replaced. The movement is reassembled, lubricated with watch-grade oils, and regulated for accurate timekeeping. The watch is then re-cased and tested for performance over 48–72 hours.
Typical Turnaround: 4–6 weeks, depending on complexity and parts availability.
Crystal Replacement (Watch Glass)
When It’s Needed: Your crystal is scratched, cracked, or broken.
The Process: The damaged crystal is carefully removed from the case. A new crystal, mineral glass, acrylic, or sapphire (depending on the watch) is custom-fit or ordered to match. It is then seated and sealed, often using a press and sealants to maintain water resistance.
Typical Turnaround: 2-4 weeks, depending on crystal type.
Crown & Stem Repair
When It’s Needed: You can’t set the time or date, or the crown feels loose or has come off.
The Process: The movement is removed and inspected. Damaged or worn crown and stem components are replaced. Everything is reassembled and tested for proper function.
Typical Turnaround: 2–4 weeks.
Water Resistance Testing & Gasket Replacement
When It’s Needed: After any repair or if you plan to expose your watch to water.
The Process: Gaskets are inspected, cleaned, and replaced as needed. The watch is placed in a pressure chamber to simulate water depth. Results confirm whether the watch remains water-resistant to the manufacturer’s rating.
Typical Turnaround: 2–4 weeks.
Vintage Watch Restoration
When It’s Needed: Heirloom or collectible watches with age-related wear or mechanical issues.
The Process: Includes a full movement service, crystal replacement, dial refinishing, case polishing, and often custom fabrication of hard-to-find parts. Every detail is handled with care to preserve original character and value.
Typical Turnaround: 4–6 weeks or longer, depending on condition and sourcing.
